Wolf Hall
I am clearly a philistine as this has been universally praised as the best thing ever but is anybody else struggling to keep awake watching this? I can appreciate the quality of it and clearly Mark Rylance is a great actor but it is so slow and I struggle to work out who is who. I had the same problem with the book!

Anybody else with me on this?

LYALL

Yes Mary Queen of Scots was a messy one. Was that the one when they held up the head and her head fell out of the wig and it rolled into the crowd?

They recon you can see and stay conscious for several minutes after.

Re: Wolf Hall
It was Mary's execution that took two blows, maybe three. A bit messy either way.

Re: Wolf Hall
Stomp,

The Queen was executed on Tower Green, Henry thoughtfully brought over a French executioner so that Anne could be beheaded by the sword, not a clumsy axe. Resigned to her death, she was reported to have walked to the scaffold at Tower Green. She completed her speech to the spectators with the cryptic comment that "If any man should meddle with my cause, I pray you to judge the best". It is believed that she presented her case in this manner so that neither her family or her daughter would suffer after her demise.

'The executioner was an expert with the sword who had no need for a block. As Anne nervously turned, with bandaged eyes, he took off her head with one sweep that sliced through her neck, her lips were seen to continue to move for a few minutes after. Anne's bloody corpse was hastily contained in an arrow chest and buried in theChapel of St. Peter ad Vincula, within the Tower'.

Thought it was Mary's executioner who got pissed but I'm probably wrong about that? I only knew about Anne because I recently took my God daughter to the tower and the Beefeater doing the tour took great delight in telling us all the gory details.

Re: Wolf Hall
Yeah the French swordsman was considered quicker and more 'humane'

Nice pair of loafers he slips off at the end!

Re: Wolf Hall
I thought that the French executioner got drunk and had to have 6 goes to get her head off.
Its Mary Queen of Scots who carried on praying after her decapitation.
I could be wrong.

Re: Wolf Hall
Duke, you probably know this but as a final 'mercy' (after not having her burnt at the stake, which came across nicely in the court scene tonight) he hired the best executioner in France who used a sword when the English used an axe and block and would sometimes take five or six hacks before the head came off. It was thought that an English executioner would be so nervous at killing the queen that he'd almost certainly fuck it up.

Apparently she didn't see her executioner at all and her head came off so quickly that her mouth was still mumbling a prayer as her head rolled across the scaffold. It freaked out everyone who saw it and confirmed to some that she was a witch.

Brilliantly made TV all genuine Tudor buildings Rylance brilliant

Nice touch from the swordsman at the end to get her to turn her head then a little side step ISIS could learn a thing or two from this!

Re: Wolf Hall
Yes, that was fantastic. Harrowing how a little bit of bullshit from a kid who the queen has teased gets him burnt at the stake.

'You forget Cremweel, what has been made can be unmade'.

'I absolutely agree, your Highness'.

Brilliant. Not a wasted word or bit of fat in the whole series. As the Kronic says, I just wish it would have gone on because now I've got to find something else to watch and look forward to.
